Review of Haywire (2011) by Dave L — 21 Jan 2013
In typical Soderbergh style Haywire starts off as a stylish punchy action film that makes no real sense. You're constantly asking yourself questions as to what's going on while Gina Carano recounts her story in flash backs to some bloke she just met for no other reason than to let the viewer know whats going on. These recounts are purposefully lacking crucial detail so we can be just as confused as Carano. We are instead treated to scene after scene of espionage action, which of course make no sense. These are all done really well and are very Bourne esq in their realism. Of course the impact of these are lost somewhat, because you're always asking yourself what the hell is going on? When the story/conspiracy is finally pieced together the effect is somewhat underwhelming.
Soderbergh is very likely guilty of trying to be too clever and top the Bourne films. Comparison with Bourne maybe unfair as the last part of the original trilogy was made five years ago, but they set the bar so high that comparison is inevitable.
