Review of Hatchet II (2010) by Ttt C — 27 Mar 2011
I really enjoyed Hatchet. Far from being a cinematic masterpiece, the film was decently written, had above average performances and a heaping helping of heart, as well as a ridiculous amount of over the top gore. All of which amounted to a really fun film. Strip out the writing, the performances and most of the heart, amp up the stupidity and the gore to the point that the experience is not only ridiculous, it's fucking preposterous and there you have Hatchet II. It's just a damn mess. I realize that term has been used to death in reference to this film but there's simply no better way to describe the film.
So where does my generous three star rating come from? Mostly from the gore, the kills, which are so ludicrous that you can't help but find them amusing. This never works in Hatchet II the reasonably insane way it did in Hatchet but at least it serves as a distraction from the rest of the film. Which is a blessing, believe me. Then there's the cast, which reads like a lineup from a second tier horror con. And yes, that sort of thing appeals to me. Finally, Danielle Harris. Wasted, as usual, but I do love seeing her on screen, regardless. I actually liked the finale. I mean, the very ass end of the film, that last scene right before the screen goes black and the credits roll. That's probably the only part of the film I can say I truly enjoyed. Hard to say if that was due to Ms. Harris or the fact that the wretched movie was over and I didn't have to watch anymore.
