Review of Hatchet II (2010) by Paul W — 31 Aug 2010
The moment the end credits started to roll on Hatchet II my immediate thought was: "I wish Adam Green had directed the 'Friday the 13th' remake". Ok I admit the Hatchet 'franchise' (can we call it that after only two films?) isn't exactly the pinacle of horror films, but they are hugely enjoyable and are clearly made by a director who truly loves and appreciates the genre.
I find Adam's dialogue genuinely funny so I actually enjoy the build-up to the swamp scenes, which, when they arrive, certainly deliver crowd pleasing gore set-pieces. But he also gets fantastic performances - Danielle Harris carries the film admirably, Tony Todd, given more screen time provides (intentionally) hilarious work and Kane Hodder, given the chance by Adam, shows he can also handle real dramatic scenes without either latex or a hockey mask.
All in all 'Hatchet II' gets both thumbs up from me and as the opening film I couldn't really have asked for anything more.
