Review of Hatchet (2006) by Allan C — 14 Feb 2016
A love letter to 80s slasher films gets everything right and is a must see for fans of this disreputable genre. The film manages to stick to the slasher film formula, but does it better than most all of the films it's paying homage to ("Halloween" and "The Hitcher" are still better).
Writer/Director Adam Green sets the film in the backwoods swamps of New Orleans and cerated his own unstoppable killer, Victor Crowley, played by Kane Hodder who played Jason in most of the Friday the 13th films.
A group of tourists on a Haunted Swamp Tour break down and then are picked off one-by-one by the seemingly unstoppable Crowley. Beside Hodder, Green casts familiar horror faces like like Robert Englund (Freddy) and Tony Todd (Candyman).
He also has familiar faces like Mercedes McNab, Joel Murray and Richard Riehle. Best all is that Green elected to use old school practical special effects (latex and fake blood) instead of the much over-used computer generate special effects.
For non-slasher film fans, this is probably a ** film, but for fans of unstoppable killer slasher flick, this one is essential viewing.
