Review of Harriet the Spy (1996) by Connor P — 03 Oct 2009
The first and quite possibly best Nickelodeon movie. Good Burger and Lemony Snicket are the only competitors. Harriet the Spy also proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, Nickelodeon is superior to Cartoon Network.
One of the three great titans of coming of age/girl to woman movies, mid 90s movies. That sentence is extremely confusing, reread it a couple of times, it'll sink in. I won't be mentioning the other two because you should be able to recall them yourself if you are any sort of respectable movie enthusiast.
This kids movie doesn't mess around; it gets to business quickly. The script is filled with coming of age and 'what do I make of this life?' quotes. It's also incredibly sad when Golly leaves and sad/depressing when Harriet is excommunicated from her classmates. There's some tough stuff, but that provides more education. Incredible that this and Matilda were released during the same summer, the summer when I was seven. I could very well have been born at the single greatest time in the history of the world.
