Review of Hard Boiled (1992) by Jarrett M — 18 Aug 2012
Hard Boiled is an over the top and very stylish action film, but if you know John Woo's films, you should already be expecting that. What may surprise you though, is how fun this film is. It has a level of energy and ambition that was somehow lost in Woo's North American films.
Funny how that seems to happen to most filmmakers that make the move to America. Perhaps that's a lesson in itself. But, I digress. Hard Boiled doesn't have an overly original story and the writing seemed a little goofy, but the action sequences more than make up for it.
The choreography is incredible and while the effects are on the flashy side, they compliment the style of the film very nicely. The highlight of the film is the third act, which is essentially one huge action set-piece that doesn't disappoint.
There is even a several minute long single take that looks very cool. Although, I seem to remember hearing that there is a hidden cut somewhere. In any event, a very impressive action film that's second only to Woo's The Killer, and holds up very well by todays standards.
Not too shabby for a film that's 20 yrs old. My problems with the film are few, but they do exist. There could have been more to the story, the dialogue could have been tightened up a bit and some of the sets showed their cheapness when subjected to explosions.
However, with some minor flaws, this is still a highly entertaining film that should please action lovers of all types.
