Review of Harakiri (1962) by Paul P — 12 May 2011
This is a rare film in that when I saw it, it instantly became a top tier favorite. I watched it again to maybe bring it down a peg and instead I came out loving it more. This is the first film of Kobayashi's that I have seen and the hype going into this was insane.
But this film exceeds the hype. Hashimoto's screenplay is masterful. Not only is it a well told story that is engaging from beginning to end, it also breaks down mores both of the time the film depicts and of current society.
The acting is note perfect with Nakadai really blowing me away. I can't heap enough praise onto 'Harakiri'.
