I'm really glad I decided to watch this. It wasn't at all what I was expecting. It feels like a Guillermo Del Toro dark fantasy/magical horror movie and it came out in 2007 so it predates all the recent "gritty" fairy tale movies Hollywood has been cranking out lately.
It never goes right where you would expect it to and it uses the concept of Hansel & Gretel in an interesting way. It's not a re-telling of the story but incorporates the ideas. It's creepy atmospheric and also pretty sad.
