On the surface Hang 'em High come across as a revenge western. It's really about an ex lawman seeking justice for the crime against him. Unlike Clint's role as the 'man with no name' in the dollar's trilogy, Jed Cooper is more of a classic western hero.

Jed continuously tries to do what's right, even if the system works against him. During his journey, Jed gains mercy and later forgiveness. Hang 'em High challenges the "take the law into your own hands" mentality of other westerns.

It is the anti-vigilante western. Unfortunately, the positive message can't overcome its pre-spaghetti dated feel and a mildly entertaining story. It's even more disappointing when learning that Clint chose Hang 'em High after turning down the role of Harmonica in Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West.

This choice may not have hurt his career, but it did keep him from another iconic role in what is arguably the greatest western ever made.
