Review of Hamlet (1990) by Jesse H — 14 May 2011
From beginning to end, Hamlet is overwhelmed with a strange tone. It feels as though the production team expect it to be a success no matter what they do just because it's Shakespeare. Sequences that are meant to be serious, such as Hamlet's "To be or not to be" monologue, end up being more laughable than anything.
The acting, while for the most part good, comes off as overly dramatic, and often makes the normally poetic dialogue sound more corny than anything. Despite all this, it isn't absolutely terrible, but I would not recommend it to the die-hard Shakespeare fan.
The music is decent, and the cast of characters give it their all.
