Review of Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) by Dan H — 11 Oct 2014
I saw the producer's cut. From what I've heard the theatrical cut was terrible (wouldn't know, never seen it), but this producer's cut is still one giant mess. The score is awful (tries to replicate the original score, but can't), the Michael here is the lamest and most non-scary one yet, and the film tries to replicate moments from the original classic and fails.
The Cult of Thorn is an interesting idea that is poorly executed (the outfits they wear are just silly). Donald Pleasance returns as Loomis (in his last film role, so sad). He struggles with the material given and ultimately comes up with nothing worthwhile or interesting (His final scene is pretty silly.
Sad to see such a great actor reduced to this). The best part of this film is a young Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle (the boy Laurie was babysitting in the original film). He is believable as Tommy (though the idea of Tommy returning is silly), and is pretty good in the role managing to be creepy, cool, and kind of hardcore.
If you like tits, you get to see the pretty Mariah O'Brien's in one short scene. I do like how the film is set in Haddonfield, and tries to tie itself directly to the original classic but in the end Halloween 6 resembles your typical 90's slasher film more than it does a Halloween film.
there are nuggets of good ideas and short glimmers of good-ness but in the end nothing really coalesces together leaving us with a scattered, messy project that shows moments of potential at the best of times and at the worst leaves you scratching your head.
