Review of Halloween II (1981) by Alex C — 13 Oct 2017
While not the groundbreaking success story of its predecessor, Halloween II holds a very special place in my heart. 1981 was probably the quintessential year for slasher films with such bloody good offerings as The Prowler, The Burning, and My Bloody Valentine.
This one, however, tops the year in my opinion. The atmosphere is still there in Dean Cundey's always stellar camerawork and Carpenter's incorporation of more synths gives the soundtrack a more immersive element of terror than the original.
It's the best score in the entire series if you ask me. Taking the events to a local hospital was a good call and livened it from the static locales of the Friday The 13th and Nightmare On Elm Street sequels.
Though it's negative critical reputation was due largely in part by the exploitative element of blood and gore that basically every slasher film from that time (most certainly that too - "EVERY SLASHER FILM FROM THAT TIME") incorporated for certain financial gain, I believe this is a worthy continuation of one of the greatest horror films of all time.
