Review of Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) by Anthony H — 07 Mar 2010
While Halloween H20 was wise to ditch the overcomplicated "laurie's daughter/curse of thorn" plotline, it almost overcompensates by making the new story fairly predictable and bland.
Yeah, Laurie has moved away and is still haunted by the memory of her brother and the fear that he is still out there. From the start of the movie you can pretty much tell exactly what is going to happen... Michael returns, kills off some kids, and has a showdown with his little sister.
The most surprising part was the ending where Laurie goes a little bit crazy and kidnaps Michael's supposedly dead body to finish him off once and for all(she certainly learned her lesson from the original and knew getting stabbed/shot and falling out windows doesnt stop him.).
The film does have some good directing and it offers some good tension and scares before some of the character deaths. It tries really hard to feel like the first one but to me it came off as too "modern" and stylish. One of my biggest qualms with this (and all the post Halloween II sequels) is Michael's mask. It just looks so fake and was not really scary at all.
Besides that, H20 is a pretty decent entry in the series that does offer some scares and finally brings an end to Michael Myers' killing spree (until the next one of course.) And if that doesn't float your boat, at least you might find some of LL Cool J's scenes pretty funny.
