Review of Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) by Tim B — 25 Aug 2009
The ending to Halloween 4 was jaw-dropping. It opened the door for a lot of new ideas and could've made the Halloween series better than what we've been getting for the last couple of years. The producers realized that Part 4 made a lot of money, took what made it successful and had another sequel out less than a year later.
The result was completely disastrous. It made hardly any money and for good reason. This entry is repulsive. The explanation of Michael coming back is absurd. It doesn't matter how lonely you are, no person in their right mind would take care of someone who just tried to kill them for a year.
What follows are tedious characters, a lame plot and a boring pace. Donald Pleasence seems annoyed, almost like he hates being there. Poor guy. Danielle Harris is really good again here but why did they make her a mute? Weird.
I like Ellie Cornell and she isn't in it long enough (she dies a lame death at that). Wendy Kaplan is the most grating, godawful actress I've ever seen. Annoying performance on an annoying character.
All the side teens are annoying too. Not only are their parts bad but the actors are bad. Dominique Othenin-Girard should've been given a restraining order from the set. This movie is not scary, is very slow and pretty bland to watch.
After seeing how he acts in real life, I'm pretty sure he told the teen actors to act the same way. The dude seems nuts and should never direct a horror movie again. I will give the idea of The Man in Black being a good idea, but that plotline wasn't in it long enough to make an intriguing plotline.
On top of this there's no nudity, bland murders, ZERO suspense, a stupid take on Michael himself and you get the worst movie in the series. Was the studio thinking this entry would actually work? Gross! The lowest of the low.
