Review of Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) by Jason D — 30 Aug 2009
Another aptly titled film, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers does in fact seem to showcase a more evil Myers than the previous entry, hellbent on taking out the surviving leads of Dr. Loomis (Donald Pleasence yet again and still fun to watch), young Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris in another excellent performance for such a young lady), and Rachel (the returning Ellie Cornell).
After being rehabilitated, Myers comes back once more to try and kill young Jamie and those around her, getting some much better results than in previous entries, which had viewers thinking that no one was safe within the film, a tactic that was actually anticipated from the filmmakers, including then-relatively unknown director Dominique Othenin-Girard.
The film is heightened with a sub-plot character known as the Man in Black whose evil is rivaled to Myers, but is only used sparingly in the film as to insight viewers to become anxious with anticipation.
The film culminates in an incredibly unpredictable ending that left me pining for more! All in all, an excellent sequel that rivaled the previous film in terms of story, delivery, and sheer entertainment.
Though Pleasence is one of the key reasons for watching most of the Halloween movies, his supporting cast all do an excellent job on screen and manage to make this sequel an essential viewing. The ending of this still gets me pumped to this very day, yet I always wind up saddened and enraged that is wasn't properly followed up in the 6th entry.
Still, part 5 is a fun film!
