Review of Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) by Brandon L — 28 Aug 2008
First of all, I think that a 5th movie was not necessary. The story could have stopped with the 4th movie's magistral ending and it would have been perfect. It was unequivocal and thoughtful. This said, there is a 5th movie and, thus, it must be reviewed.
The 5th movie begins where the 4th ends, then immediately leaps a whole year forward. It's not bad, but it's not great either. There are somewhat scary parts, no obvious plotholes (except for that mysterious trenchcoat guy), nothing particularly creative, and the acting is not bad (though I must say that Danielle Harris as Jamie again does a hell of a job, significantly raising the average performance.
.. a lot). The ending is clearly tailored to suggest that a 6th movie is unavoidable. It stimulates the viewer's curiosity and motivation to see the 6th movie, setting high expectancies for the sequel.
Now, with a so-so 5th movie and almost nothing left of the original setting, what is to be expected from a 6th one ? The risk of killing the serie is HUGE.
