Review of Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) by Liam C — 30 Jun 2017
There's been so many of these now, I'm struggling to recall what the differences are between each one. Despite the fact that Michael appeared to be shot, blown up and killed in the last episode, this one reveals that he somehow managed to escape that predicament and go into hiding, until it was time to wreck havoc again on October 31st the following year.
At which point, his home town of Haddonfield is in trouble again as he's coming after his niece. Of course rather than go after her and just kill her, he has to kill just about everyone else in the town first and then struggle to actually butcher a small child who always seems to outwit him.
There's nothing particularly original about this as everyone is just murdered old school style, with the traditional blade and having watched several other movies in this franchise, it starts to become a bit repetitive.
I'd say the body count is lower, which is unusual for a sequel, and there's no real improvement on its predecessors. It's definitely the ideal film to watch if you're after a scary movie night in and it defines the genre perfectly.
Like many classics before it though, people will remember the originals more and these editions will just fade into oblivion, until someone remakes them with modern technology. Always worth a watch, but this one lacks that killer punch to deliver another knock out blow in what is a truly memorable franchise.
