Review of Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) by Eric C — 04 Sep 2009
Here is the bastard step child of the Halloween-Michael Myers series. The production of this film was rushed severely after the opening weekend for Part 4 showed a renewed interest in the franchise. This was a mistake though.
A script was quickly put into play and not even the writer new what some of the stuff he was adding into the film meant(the Thorn symbol, man in black). We once again get gore over story and faceless teens are just there to be slaughtered.
Danielle Harris, Donald Pleasance, Beau Starr(cameo) and Ellie Cornell(in a cameo sense)return in their roles and manage to keep the film watchable. But since there characters are in it that much that puts a damper on things.
The Myers house(which hasn't been seen since the films been shot at Salt Lake City, Utah) is terrible and really takes you out of the film. The deaths are crazy and unimaginitive and a storyline that was introduced at the end of part 4 is completely left to one sentence worth of an explanation.
Michael Myers is played by Donald Shanks and while his mask looks nothing like the mask in part 4 he does do a fine job, even if the film was crap.
The element that did work was the dark atmosphere, it was dark and gritty and kept with the previous films. While I stated several flaws in the film I do have my moments where I just feel like watching it. So I won't say its total crap, but its close.
Dominique Othenin-Gerard directed this film and its ever a wonder he ever got anymore work. I guess its no surprise that Omen IV: The Awakening was partially directed by him.
2 out of 5.
