Review of Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989) by Nathan C — 29 Oct 2011
The fifth installment ends up being weak, after a killer cliffhanger (literally!) brought up at the end of the fourth. More generic slasher tropes, more silly teen hijinks, Michael still being alive after getting killed 100 times, and a nonsensical retcon of things undermine what is becoming a progressively darker mythos.
The reveal was dumb. Why? Because right when it started getting a little deeper... he starts killing again. Greeeaaat. However, you can still rely on Donald Pleasance and Danielle Harris (who's stronger here), as well as a few good Carpenter-esque scares to get you through.
And the set pieces (particulary the one in the vents) are somewhat better. However, this feels somehow way too drawn-out, and this ends on a sour, disappointing note. Besides, I didn't even get why Michael Myers would try to kill her own niece in the first place.
Wtf?
