Review of Halloween (2018) by Daniel B — 22 Oct 2018
Been waiting for this for a year because it was meant to be a sober, serious scary film. Instead Michael was more super human than ever, surviving various assaults like Freddy Krueger, Laurie is a penniless alcoholic who cant cope with a family dinner without stealing peoples wine yet has built a Home Alone style death trap mansion that has easy access windows and to top it off theres a wacky psychiatrist who lets podcasters scream at his patients before jumping the shark half way through.
I know from that opening sequence that they'd done what they said they weren't going to. I wasn't prepared for the humour which they said wouldn't be there or the fact that the film didnt have a significant plot and was mostly concerned with recreating nods to the previous films.
Easter eggs are great when you have to find them but not when they make up the basic plot. They also made an unforgivable mistake with the marketing - put out so much footage, including the death of a major character in the final act, that I had seen most of the plot.
There was virtually nothing that was a surprise because of it. And worst of all they allowed the finale to be described in the iTunes track listing sp I knew what happened weeks before I saw it. Its been a hit because of fans like me and dumb teens who dont know what they are watching but I consider this an insult to those of us who have stuck by it.
They should have spent a year getting the script into a far better shape. This was such a disappointment.
