Review of Halloween (2018) by Mandeth — 09 Mar 2019
Not quite a horror movie, not a romance, not an action movie. What the hell was it? In some ways it was a deconstruction of the original. Michael Myers is reduced to a sad old coot and Laurie Strode is the most tragic character of all characters in the original.
The movie has her stuck in a nightmare for the past 40 years. She survived in 1978 but lost herself and her life. In an age when SJW creators like Rian Johnson create perfect Mary Sue's, it should come as a relief that Halloween 2018 depicts Laurie with some flaws.
Unfortunately, she gets the same mistreatment Rian Johnson gave Luke Skywalker and is a character paralyzed by trauma. In both instances the trauma is just a gimmick that is not even explored. Just something to beef up roles and attempts to make unremarkable movies seem more profound than they really are.
The movie has less tension that H20 did but at least the mask is a little better.
