Review of Halloween (2018) by Joshua W — 19 Oct 2018
This is an excellent movie! I wish I could give it five stars and call it a masterpiece. Alas, I cannot. The humor was inappropriate at times (horrible in one particular scene), the new psychologist was bordering on superfluous, and the British podcasters were not much more than a plot device.
Those things being said, the movie is incredible. Jamie Lee Curtis turns in an astounding performance as Laurie Strode, who is both weaker and stronger after the terror of the original Halloween. Stronger--she is tough and has prepared herself for fighting Michael Myers for 40 years.
And weaker--she suffers from PTSD and has allowed it to damage her familial relationships. Both sides are portrayed well--stellar performance! Judy Greer does excellently as Karen Strode. Virginia Gardner delivers a decent performance, as does the man who plays her father.
The boys in the film seem like typical high school boys and serve their purpose, though one of the characters could have been more compelling. Michael Myers was menacing, unstoppable, and straightforward in his kills.
The suspense in most of the scenes was pulled off masterfully. The Third Act was intense and dramatic -- genuine edge of your seat quality! This isn't a slasher flick devoted to murdering dumb, young hedonists that you feel indifferent about at best.
No, you care about Laurie and her struggles, and this care is made all the more palpable in the Third Act. The soundtrack was beautiful and added tremendously to the suspense and ambience of the film.
Love this movie. Will be buying it on Blu-Ray. 4/5 Stars.
