Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by The D — 26 Feb 2017
Sometimes it seemed like Braveheart meets Tropic Thunder meets Band of Brothers. The obligatory clichéd shots, the hokey dialogue, and the inauthentic CG is off-putting. All that said, I still loved it! First off it's an amazing story that you'd likely consider just too ridiculous if it weren't in fact true.
The Band of Brothers style clips at the end were quite effective. Mel knows exactly how the formula works and all the necessary ingredients for a compelling, epic film. The audience knows they're being manipulated but still doesn't care.
It is a classic made by a master storyteller who has made some huge mistakes in his personal life, as most of us human beings have if we're being honest. Time to forgive because Hollywood needs his genius.
We have missed him and his vision of the human spirit.
