Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by Sean T — 04 Feb 2017

Andrew Garfield does an excellent job portraying a man whose convictions and ideals could very well have made him an arrogant man, but instead is simply humble in his abilities. The three distinct parts of this movie (Doss's love story, basic training, and finally Hacksaw Ridge) all work on their own, but in some ways, the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

One particular focus at the end of the movie was featuring the shots of the Japanese officers, which seemed like an odd choice considering their facelessness throughout the rest of the movie. Gibson himself is true to form as a master of direction in terms of pacing and shot clarity; he's always known what works well in the language of action in a war movie.
