Review of Groove (2000) by Justine G — 15 Jun 2007
This movie comes closer than any other to capturing what the rave scene was and is truly like, probably because it was directed by real ravers. The story goes that the production ran into some financial trouble, until some Silicone Valley ravers, riding the crest of the dotcom wave, rocked up and wrote out a cheque that allowed the producers to finish the movie... The result was possibly the only true reflection of a culture that was badly misrepresented by the press as the 'chemical culture' - newsflash, chemicals had been around for years before.
Anyway... The mailing list culture, the driving around, the warehouse parties, dropping your first ANYTHING, the false sense of love and security, the true friends, hovering on the edge of insanity but being totally sure that you were fine. That's what it was all about, and this movie makes you tingle, sweat and rush - it's awesome and real. The soundtrack rocks and the people are humans.
Essential viewing.
Those were the good old days of 'being bulletproof' and they were awesome.
