Review of Grey Gardens (2009) by Dustin F — 09 Jan 2008
A true cinematic gem. This documentary tackles all the classical motifs such as exploitation , the relationship between filmmaker and subject, and is ridiculously coherent on many different levels. Edie and Edith are unbelievable entertaining, funny, and ultimately tragic recluses.
Furthermore, what makes this movie so spectacular is that the maysles brothers put themselves in it. For one of the first times, they are crossing the boundaries of tradition direct cinema. This is a precursor to many of their later films.
