Review of Grey Gardens (2009) by Rochelle H — 13 Feb 2013
Two women sit amongst the crumbling artifacts of a shimmering, more celebrated past and we are allowed to peek into their unique existence. This haunting documentary, a penetrating depiciton of a mother-daughter relationship as well as an emotionally complex look at a way of living life completely on one's own terms, is one of the most unforgettable films ever made.
Heartbreaking and hilarious, inspiring and eerie - its a claustrophobic excursion into a world of dreams and memories. The gothic mansion by the sea becomes many things. Its a treasure chest and an elephant graveyard.
Its a stage and a battleground. But most of all it is a home and one is hard-pressed not to want to return.
