Review of Green Room (2016) by Dolby W — 15 May 2016
The best movie I have seen this year!
Little did I expect to actually enjoy it more the second time, and this is coming from the guy who has said that it is the best movie he has seen this year. We have all these big movies like Civil War, Deadpool, X-men, Batman V Superman coming out this year, and in comes Green Room and proves that a smaller movie can show up the biggest of blockbusters.
Of course these are entirely different movies, but still, I think that we need to embrace smaller films when they reach the big screen because they can prove how the craft is done.
Green Room is a horror masterpiece. There are no ghosts, vampires, werewolves, or any supernatural elements in it; no, it is pure, raw, human horror. The deaths in the movie are not played for gore, or straight shock as one might expect, but instead to put the viewer in this state of unease, and panic as the viewer is left believing that no one is making it out alive. The deaths are slow and brutal, and it ups the ante because of this. It helps the viewer think of what it would be like to be in this situation, and it is 100% brilliant.
While watching it, many people will probably think "why would they do that" during some of the choices made by the protagonists of the story. However, in a more real situation like this, one has to take into consideration that these are just kids, they're not too smart, and they're scared, and also while one is in such a panicked state, they don't become more clever, they are frightened, and that's what they are focusing on.
All of the performances were on point. Patrick Stewart made for a great leader of this Neo-Nazi cult, Anton plays a great role of the scared kid trying to make it out, and Macon Blair proves to be someone who needs to be looked at for future roles, I have seen the three movies he's stared in, and he nailed it.
Once the ball starts rolling in this film, it doesn't stop. It is the perfect pure horror film and it needs to be seen. Jeremy Saulnier is a guy who I definitely hope gets to make more movies as all three of his films are great, and improved with each new film he's made.
