Review of Green Room (2016) by Legitsalt — 02 May 2019
While this movie may not be the greatest piece of cinema ever created, I always have fun when watching this. I think that this is one of the better thrillers out there and is definitely Saulnier's best movie as of Hold the Dark's release. While this movie does paint with generally broad strokes, it does manage to hit many interesting things in such cross-fire. Most notably, this movie serves as a satire of trashy horror films, especially with the line, "Maybe we should split up" "Totally".
There are some great performances in this movie as well, Anton Yelchin, Patrick Stewart, and Imogen Poots each had their own pulls whilst on screen. In addition to this, this movie is also brutally gory, while at the same time maintaining an air of comedy. The fact that the movie takes place over a music venue adds a lot to the movie and makes it feel more genuine. While the skinhead Nazi punks felt sort of tacked on, seeing Patrick Stewart as a skinhead was really fun. The skinheads served two purposes in the movie. First off, their inclusion allowed the 'subtle' delivery of the song "Nazi Punks **** Off". Secondly, they serve as a critique of the subservient nature of the fascist alt-right, i.e. killing musicians for different coloured shoelaces. If you are someone who enjoys cheap horror movies or thrillers, definitely check this one out, I'd say its worth the watch, especially as it is one of Yelchin's last films.
