Review of Green Room (2016) by Jonas E — 28 Jun 2017
After seeing Salnier's Blue Ruin and this, I really think this is a director to watch. Blue Ruin is so powerful with such little story. Both movies had me sweating due to the tension they build. Saunders know just how much tension you can wrench out of a locked door with the bad guys on the other side.
Neither movie has a lot of substance at the end of the day, though both have the potential, this one in particular with the skin-head subplot. Ultimately, though, little is done with it. Saulnier has the darkest of humors, in the Coen tradition, but his gift is in the cinematography and his ability to build suspense.
I think he could have gone a bit more over the top with Patrick Stewart, but the old man makes a strong, brooding, calculating villain.
