Review of Grave Encounters 2 (2012) by Robert H — 05 Sep 2013
Grave Encounters 2 is an upgrade from the first film and takes the found footage film into a slightly new realm by having it relate directly back to the original film. The addition of actual footage from youtube movie reviewers was especially smart. Does the film add anything new to horror otherwise? Not really. It's your standard cliche attempts at scares and suspense. Sometimes it works but most the time it's pretty flat. Visually the film is really really well done. You do get the feel of the events in the film being real edited footage. That is until you start to break it down and realise some of the camera shots that show up in some of the edits couldn't have actually taken place. You'll get a scene with 2 cameras and yet somehow there will be a third or even fourth camera angle. It isn't too detrimental but it is something that would get picked apart if it happened in a big blockbuster film.
Grave Encounters 2 is a decent low budget addition to the found footage film that clearly feels like a piece of fiction but still works in terms of storytelling.
