Review of Gothic (1987) by Brendan K — 07 Jul 2007
A most underrated achievement from that notorious british cinema fiend Ken Russel. A brilliant concept and the closest thing to the weirdness and spirit of early gothic novels that I've ever seen. Thomas Dolby did the soundtrack and it is brilliant.
This is not a particularly scary film but its decadent, freakshow appeal is formidable. Shot in a Lake district masquerading as Geneva the locations have a charming, authentic quality and Gabriel Byrne is the best Byron yet.
