Review of Gothic (1987) by Matthew P — 19 May 2009
I watched this film due to my own interest in Mary Shelley's "Frankenstien"... and was rather disappointed.
The story is disjointed... and grows even more disjointed as the characters become even more frantic and opium affected. The acting was sub-par, though Gabriel Byrne was fantastic as the rather malevalent Lord Byron.
Very little of the things that occured made sense to the over-all tale of the group spending a raining night telling ghost stories. The Director, Ken Russel would have you believe that under the influence of opiates, the group conjured some dark terror that drove them to a frenzy of running, screaming, and ultimately covered in mud mumbling around a skull.
And I want to know what a mechanical belly dancer had to do with the whole thing...
