Review of Good (2008) by Frank G — 24 Jul 2009
An interesting drama set in pre-WWII Germany, with academic Viggo Mortensen making choices to further his career that put him into opposition with Jewish doctor pal Jason Isaacs. This is quite an interesting film, but I was not sure what it was trying to say.
That good men can be swept along by evil? That old saying about all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing? Of course us viewers can see exactly where Viggo's ideas about euthanasia are leading, and the final scenes at a concentration camp are suitable harrowing.
I just couldn't quite see what the point was. Were we supposed to feel sympathy for him? Strong performances all round and quite engrossing, but a bit of an oddity.
