Review of Gone Girl (2014) by Johann M — 07 Jul 2018
As I continue what is seemingly becoming some kind of unintentional 'Fincher-revisited' marathon, I have finally rediscovered 'Gone Girl'; a movie I vastly underrated on my original viewing.
I remember when this movie came out in 2014 - I was only 14 myself, and had very recently discovered David Fincher for the first time; with one of his masterpieces, 'Zodiac', having particularly drawn my attention.
'Gone Girl' had some similar traits - being a murder mystery investigation - and being that age I allowed the great trailers and promotional material to get me beyond hyped. Being the idiot I was, I even somehow managed to spoil the reveal - which I have still not forgiven myself for.
When I finally saw it, I still thought it was very good, but as with a lot of movies where I allowed myself to get far too excited, I came out underwhelmed. Rewatching this for the first time since, I now realise - I really was an idiot.
This is typically stunning work from Fincher and, whilst I don't think it's going to become a classic, it's still a breathtaking work of art. The script, the performances, the score, the direction, the cinematography, the editing.
..everything is given the same amount of care and attention, and everything is done to near perfection. A fantastically engrossing mystery, and one of Fincher's best - whatever that means anymore.
