Review of Goldfinger (1964) by Seth S — 21 Jan 2015
"I'd like a double martini, shaken not stirred.''.
James Bond is the greatest secret agent in the history of cinema. If you like Bourne or Mission Impossible, that's fine. However, Mr. Bond has been alive since the 50's. He's a timeless action hero who's been portrayed by several actors. Considered by most to be the quintessential Bond film, "Goldfinger'' is one of the greatest classic action films ever made. The film is directed by Guy Hamilton and stars Sean Connery, Gert Frobe, Honor Blackman, and Harold Sakata.
James Bond (Connery) has been assigned to watch a wealthy businessman named Auric Goldfinger (Frobe). His superiors suspect he has been smuggling gold in and out of several countries. Bond follows him into the mountains where he uncovers a secret factory. Goldfinger's plan soon unfolds, and Bond must save the day again.
Sean Connery was the first actor to play Bond, and boy is he fantastic. His performance was charming and full of charisma. You can tell he really loves playing Bond. I was also surprised how great Gert Forbe was as the villain. He was intelligent, sophisticated, and silver tongued.
The production on this film is extremely impressive. This was made back in the sixties when there was no such thing as CGI. That means allot of great practical effects. The set pieces, gadgets, and action scenes in this film are top notch. The car chases alone were phenomenal. Every gadget was cool and stylized, and the stunts and fight scenes were very thrilling. I was also impressed with the camera work, but what stood out the most was the script. This is a very well written movie. It's incredibly smart, and it has brilliant dialogue.
"Goldfinger'' is the quintessential Bond film, widely considered to be the very best one. Any fan of Bond should watch this film. It's well written, sharply directed, has great performances, and features thrilling action. It's one of the most impressive classic action films I've ever seen.
