Review of Golden Door (2006) by Priya T — 30 Mar 2008
From a world mired in old traditions, magic, and poverty, this family sets out for the new world, in search of onions that are as big as three giant pumpkins, a tree that grows money, and the river of milk. The harsh realities of the journey--cramped third class arrangements and storms do nothing to hamper the dream. They arrive at Ellis Island, wide eyed, excited, brave, and hopeful. It is time for Salvatore and his family to choose--between the old world, personified by his mother, and the new world, personified by the mysterious English woman.
The movie makes seamless transitions between reality and dream. it is beautifully shot and has some almost lyrical sequences.
It is a great cinematic experience.
