Review of Golden Door (2006) by Fernanda R — 22 Jan 2010
A sharp and sombre look at how Sicilian immigrants became 'white' in America at the start of the twentieth century, although this movie is not about that political process but about their journey from peasant farmers and the physical act of migrating to the 'new' world via Ellis Island.
Lovingly told and well-shot but slow, and ultimately unsatisfying. More like part one of a mini series than a complete and fulfilling film. Ends rather abruptly too, but still always refreshing to see unusual faces, stories and lives on screen.
