Review of Godzilla (2014) by John R — 11 Oct 2015
MY GODZILLA REVIEW **SPOILER ALERT**!!! By JFR; OMG We screwed it up AGAIN!!!
Ok, VERY DISAPPOINTING! MAYBE the 8th or 9th best Godzilla movie ever, & that means 4 or 5 men in Rubber suits beat CGI BY LEAPS & BOUNDS! 6th best "Looking" Godzilla. He only "Amps up" & blows fire ONE freekingTime-Blows fire twice in total!!! All fights with the "Muto's" are IN THE DARK!!! Or at least a "Sundown" light.
The Muto's look like RODAN, not AT ALL like Mothra (As intended. Copyright for the "Mothra" name was rejected by the Japanese who own it.) -who btw blows these faceless things away ON STRINGS! You see Godzilla maybe twice, & only part of him in Daylight!!!
Pacific Rim/Battleship BLOWS THIS AWAY! Balderdash to you Critics with your great reviews! I'll go with the growing negative ones.
And I was prepped, I knew that last 1/2 hour was "Payoff" time. I was still waiting for it, more monsters attacking, but that WAS the payoff (I didn't look at the time & thought it felt short at that point, so)...& it just ended! Actually, I think I enjoyed the non-monster parts just as much. So, no "Anti-climatic nor expected too much" here.
0 suspense. 0 Human factor. 0 Drama. 0 laughs. 0 emotional content. 0 "Urgency" people feel. 0 "Breaking News" (lol), nor are we even a part of the film, other than the main characters & co-stars who, except for the guy who "knows" & freeks out, every1 else acts even less concerned than as if a Plane disappeared, for example...And Ken Watanabe, is just a theoretical cliché after cliché, with all of his theories spot on, of course. He's Japanese! They HAD to make him the "Brain".
The "buildup" to finally seeing Godzilla in all his humongous glory was ok, but there was a very poor "payoff"-he just was finally shown instead of slowly rising upwards bit by bit to awe us with his enormity & visually stunning appearance. They tried something like that but it wasn't done right at all.
Some VERY cool moments. maybe 3. It's MOSTLY about the Birds, & for the birds...
And, after fighting 2 giant "Birds", he passes out! Wasn't even close to his least-toughest battle, & even the toughest ones he always walked away from feeling just fine. Must be a lack of Sushi combined with American food only-he's out of shape & unhealthy like most Americans lol!
We Americans need to leave Godzilla to the masters, the creators-THE JAPANESE. Because after 16 years & the invention of CGI, I entered the theater all crazy-pumped, left it asking "Why why why???".
Totally deflated, "been there/done that", & in much more satisfying manners. I'm basing my "review" on "What could have been", "16 years of sky-rocketed technology & this is all they did"? And really, for non-hardcore Zilla people, this is no doubt THEIR favorite, because they don't "get it/understand" what we hardcore's hoped for, & expected, rightfully so.
So, lol at me after all my enthusiasm, all my posts, all my countdowns. It's ok, and that's the 1st & final time I'll ever see a 3D film in a theater, because my LG 65" 3D Smart TV 3D quality & my sound system BLOWS IT AWAY! And this was IMAX 3D!! Please!
40.00 freekin dollars! Glad I waited for "Smaug" on 3D On-Demand! (BTW, Smaug blew this away too! Not the Dragon, The Movie! No other Monster beats Godzilla in his true form, even at his near worst-here.).
In closing, as a regular "Monster movie", it was ok. I'd say 2 stars, MAYBE. 2 1/2. As a Godzilla film-2 stars, mostly lousy teases & 30 minutes of a LEGENDS RETURN! For Fux sake!
Can't wait for the new Japanese version-Man in rubber suit. I give up on American made Godzilla, DONE!
Please pardon my vulgarity, I just got in from seeing shit...I mean it.
Go Japan/Toho-Make another Classic like most of your others. Strike 2 on American versions. Maybe Peter Jackson or Guillermo del Toro will do one RIGHT! We can only hope...
Peace out.
