Review of Godzilla (2014) by Patrick W — 15 Jul 2018
Gareth Edward's Godzilla is truly a sight to behold. It is a prototypical American action film involving really big Kaiju that attempt to kill each other and destroy as much of a major ciry as they can.
For those of you expecting a film akin to the Toho classics of 1954-1970, I am afraid you are going to be disappointed. Simply put, this version of Godzilla was invented for one reason and one reason alone: to fight King Kong. Warner Brothers knew that Kong would have no chance against the Toho monster, so they made a creature that will sell tickets in 2019. The attempt of making political/bureaucratic statements in this movie comes off flat. The only human character that was worth his screen time was Ken Watanabe. I can't give this film any more than 3 stars because it is a good popcorn flick, but that's about it. It fails to live up to the films before it. Want to watch a good modern Godzilla film? Go rent Shin Godzilla. Toho returns with their monster in a scary, newly rebooted version of the big guy that does justice to the franchise.
