Review of Godzilla (2014) by The Critic ( — 11 Jan 2015
Japan's iconic monster smashes his way into another big screen outing, but this Hollywood treatment takes itself way too seriously to be as fun as the 1998 box office fizzer of the same name. The central characters and their relationships with one another aren't very well fleshed out and are thereby incredibly dull; there's very little investment in our protagonist (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and the title amphibian is kept at such a distance that not even the action sequences are a worthy pay-off.
Director Gareth Edwards makes his audience wait far too long for a creature they're already familiar with and doesn't really do much with him. The special effects are undeniably outstanding, and the film is beautifully photographed and scored--but, let's face it, we came for monster.
