Review of Godzilla 1985 (1985) by Nicholas R — 08 Jun 2014
This is a review of the Japanese version. After several attempts Toho revitalizes it's Godzilla franchise, returning to its serious roots. The story takes place thirty years after the original Godzilla's attack.
In terms of story it's well done. Godzilla's return is a global issue with a lot of political themes. For example Godzilla destroys a Soviet nuclear sub, but they blame the US for it. This has the US and Soviet Union on the verge of war until things are cleared up.
They are more than willing to launch nuclear weapons at Godzilla on Japanese soil. This gives the movie a real world feeling but that doesn't mean it's without its faults. The main characters aren't as developed as they should be and are a bit bland.
As for the effects? They are done by Teruyoshi Nakano and are excellent with an impressive and expansive Tokyo cityscape. The suit is also well executed. I have some issues in the destruction of the miniatures and "Cybot" but overall the effects are superb.
In the end The Return of Godzilla is an effective way to start the Heisei series of films returning the films to its darker serious tone.
