Review of God's Own Country (2017) by Vincenzo P — 01 Feb 2018
Yet another gay themed movie made to be used and consumed by the heterosexual gaze. Basically, this is a British Brokeback Mountain with a happy ending -- nothing more, but much less. Basically, this movie is praised by all critics because it shows two men loving each other (something which still manages to make people oooooh and ahhhhh) and, in the times of secessions and Brexit, one of said men is from Romania ("wow, what a big statement!").
Speaking about the character from Romania, his mother used to teach English: how very convenient for the plot that this character can understanding everything the farmers with a strict accent say! The cinematography is just dull and ordinary.
The dialogues are really flat and verge the ridiculous (Guy 1:"You are a freak", Guy 2: "Sort of", Guy 1: "Faggot!", Guy 1 and Guy 2 laugh together... honestly). I feel like the stereotype of the flamboyant gay is being replaced with the stereotype of the strong, super-masculine yet sensitive gay: but they are just stereotypes anyway! I save the soundtrack, nice and touching.
The ending song, by Patrick Wolf, is deep and catchy. Otherwise, this movie is just much ado about nothing.
