What a beautiful film. In so many ways. This is Francis Lee's first feature film and I am so damn excited to see what else he ends up doing. This movie is full of wonderful visual symmetry and contrast, much of it's story told with minimal dialogue.
The protagonist, Johnny, has a character arc that is heartwarming and wonderful. I'm not entirely sure what to say about the movie other than just telling anyone who might read this to seek it out.
It's a really lovely romance movie. It had me completely invested in Johnny's family and relationship. Gheorghe is perhaps a bit too perfect at times, he doesn't have much of his own conflict.
But he's just so fantastic that you don't really mind, and you fall in love with him as much as Johnny does. Also it was nice to see Patsy Ferran pop up in a movie, even in a small role. I saw her in National Theatre Live's As you Like it and she was the stand-out performer in that to the point that I instantly recognized her when she popped up here.
Anyway, God's Own Country is one of the best films of the year. Give it a watch.
