Review of Gods and Generals (2003) by Bob A — 22 Jun 2011
This movie is as good a civil war movie as one will find. The battle scenes are extremely well done and researched, the acting is fantastic and the dialogue used is very time period appropriate. A constant criticism this film come under fire for is that of being "pro-confederate.
" This is an unfair treatment for the simple fact that both sides in this film are treated with respect to their histories. Those "pro-confederate" complainers are only really mad at the fact that it is not anti-confederate.
This film treats the Civil War without the political correctness that turns to bias. If one is TRUELY interested in the Civil War, they will appreicate the fact that the Confederates are not the bad guys propaganda history makes them to be.
I understand, however, with the non-civil war buffs will very much hate the movie because in reality they do not understand the movie. If one is a true civil war buff that can "handle the truth" or understands the true political, social, economical, and moral issues of the civil war, this movie will be one that you will very very much enjoy.
I bought this movie on VHS in 2003 when I was 11 years old. I am now 19 and am a history major with the civil war at the core of my interests and I now own the directors cut which makes this movie even better.
IT has gotton one of the most unfair reputations from people who are not qualified to make some of these statements because they are simply too ignorant when it comes to the issue of the United States Civil War.
