Review of God Grew Tired of Us (2006) by Richard S — 11 Sep 2007
Yes, the boys' stories are compelling and worth documenting, but unfortunately the film wasn't too far removed from an expanded 60 Minutes-esque TV special. I wish they'd spent more time on the initial reaction to US culture.
This was a rare opportunity to document the real-life equivalents of Herzog's Kasper Hauser. Their working lives in the states were necessary to the film, but less interesting for me. That's not to say that it's not worth seeing.
It's certainly compelling, but I didn't see the masterpiece that many critics have proclaimed. On a side note, I loved how they included a scene at Whole Foods that featured one of the boys discussing what must be the most disgusting fruit I've ever tried.
I never got the name, but it's orange and spiky, but filled with slimy goo and hundreds of seeds.
