Review of God Grew Tired of Us (2006) by Aaron A — 13 Jun 2011
"It was as if the last day, as people say in the Bible, that there will be a last day, that Jesus Christ will come, and whatever on Earth will be judged.".
Synopsis: After raising themselves in the desert along with thousands of other "lost boys," Sudanese refugees John, Daniel and Panther have found their way to America.
Though this film wonderfully captures the awe, amazement, and enthusiasm of individuals from third world countries experiencing alien luxuries such as running water, food packaged in bags and boxes, electricity and simply the opportunity to be in a position where you can help others. The film is way more than just a "immigrant tale". For starters, the film doesn't go into detail about the luxuries of america, instead it deals heavily with some of America's drawbacks, or atleast, the shellshock of being thrown into another culture. The fact that it's a country always on the go, with little time for family and friends. The fact that here in america, concern for one's own people seem to fall by the wayside in the quest for more money.
Indeed, this picture is more a first hand account of the different sociological differences between two cultures. John, Daniel and Panther, are not only highly intelligent (these guys are full of philosophical ideas) but are also highly educated (they speak damn fine english), and much of the film deals with their view of america, and their desire to go back to africa and help make their country a better place.
God grew tired of Us is a inspiring story of "Lost Boys" finally having the opportunity to make their home world a better place, by finding success in America.
