Review of Gloomy Sunday (1999) by Jane L — 15 Sep 2007
Do you remember the last lines of Istvan Szabo's MEPHISTO? Indeed why is everyone exploited as a puppet during WW2, when every country leads its army for a greater role in the future world? But there is something missing! There is a false presumption: a system is never working to perfection, when executed even in a small community of human beings! Since when we are talking about humans, we must know that these fabulous creatures are able to go for their own arbitrary decisions and reactions, even for the price of their own lives! That's the reason why no system can decide for its people (as depicted in futuristic masterpieces as Orwell's 1984 and Rand's ANTHEM). It is more like Antonis Saramakis's novel, THE FLAW!
In GLOOMY SUNDAY, even in an occupied Hungary, these are love and gloomy melodies, leading the lives of the four characters! There is a quadrangle in which jealousy rules, not hatred! Slow-paced intersections of beautifully composed tableaus, accompanied by mesmerizing musical composition, render a top quality to an arguable narrative!
