Review of Gloomy Sunday (1999) by Sajib K — 17 Mar 2010
Unleashing love, passion proliferates in this period drama set in the backdrop of the German invasion of Hungary during World War II. The movie revolves around a young woman whose charm, enigma, beauty, surrealism mesmerized any man who set eyes on her.
She finds solace in two guys - one being an restaurant owner and a connoisseur of culinaries; another one is a young promising pianist whose composition of "Gloomy Sunday" (the song of love and death) enchants as well as excruciates anyone who becomes inclined towards it.
A passionate love triangle develops between the trio which is about to experience the irony of destiny. Melodious background scores, refreshing historical set, erecting sensulaity, touching story of friendship, jealousy and betrayal, skillful subtlety and overall a tactful tragic ending -- this is a glittering movie, gloomy in its content but glorified in its toast to your emotions.
