Review of Glen or Glenda (1953) by Grace C — 11 Mar 2008
As far as Ed Wood goes, this is probably his best (and by best I mean worst) ever. It does the job that his films are meant to, be ridiculus and over the top, making you laugh and/or want to stop watching the film altogether.
The movie, in all seriousness (if you can say that about a wood flick) actually does touch upon a somewhat important issue that was very personal to ed wood. My main problem with the film is that Wood didn't deliver his message in a subtle way, through any of the bad dialogue or the twenty-minute long acid trip/dream sequence, but felt that his audience was so stupid that he had to have that psychologist sit there and basically explain everything that had already been said through (weird and confusing)symbolism.
I think it would have been better to shorten the film and leave the audience to interperet a little of it themselves, rather than voicing his own opinion through a deus ex machina sort of character.
